Chapter Eleven

Devon stood at Holly’s side, both of them staring at the slightly grainy, black and white image moving around on the screen. Thirteen years hadn’t diminished the wonder of seeing into a baby’s world. To someone who’d witnessed the horrors of war and lived through his own personal loss, this was a refreshing reminder of how wonderful the gift of life was.

“Look, Devon, there’s a hand, and the fingers are moving,” Holly said in a hushed voice. “He looks like he’s waving.”

The ultrasound technician, a friendly, middle-aged woman who’d introduced herself as Dottie, stopped gliding the wand over Holly’s belly long enough to laugh. “He looks like he’s waving? Is that wishful thinking? Or have you seen something I haven’t?”

Holly looked puzzled for a second, and then her face cleared. “I see what you mean. I called the baby a ‘he’. I go back and forth. Some days I refer to the baby as a girl and other days as a boy.”

“Do you want to know for sure?”

Holly laughed. “No. It sounds clichéd, but I want that moment, like you see in the movies, where the doctor delivers the baby and says, ‘Congratulations, it’s a boy or it’s a girl,’ whatever the case may be.”

“Okay, I won’t tell Mom.” Dottie’s glance moved to Devon. “What about Dad? Does he want to know?”

“I’m just a friend, but I agree with Holly. In a day and age where we feel like we have to know everything immediately, it’s nice to have a few surprises left.”

“Then my lips are sealed. I won’t say a word.”

For a while, the only sound in the room was the hum of the fluorescent lights and the clicking of the keys as Dottie meticulously recorded all the various medical data about the baby.

“Is that an ear?” Holly asked excitedly.

“Yes, it is,” Dottie confirmed. “If I can get this just right, you might get a look at your baby’s face.”

Devon felt Holly’s hand reaching for his. As their fingers touched, rays of warmth spread through him. He turned away from the screen to look at her. The smile she gave him brought a lump to his throat and an ache to his heart. He didn’t want to be a friend of the family. He wanted to be a husband to Holly and a father to her baby, not because he wanted to help her, or felt sorry for her, but because he loved her. Deeply, immeasurably, irrevocably.

For years, he’d been holding on to the belief that his inability to save his marriage to Megan meant he didn’t deserve a second chance. But dealing with a mistake is more than assigning blame and accepting the consequences. It’s also important to reach a point where you forgive yourself and move on. In his avoidance of relationships, Devon had deprived himself of the opportunity to do that. This had left him stuck in the past, emotionally tied to an event that no longer held any significance.

On a rainy, fall day, he met someone who made him want that second chance.
